December 31, 2005

Take that, bitches!

Haaa hahahahaha! You thought I couldn't do it, didn't you? Well, today, December 31, in the year of our Lord 2005, I read nine books. That's right: Nine. They are as follows:
  1. Biscuit Wins A Prize, by Alyssa Capucilli, in which a little yellow puppy is very frisky and, well, you know. Wins a prize.

  2. Who's Under That Hat? by David A. Carter. Wheee! Lift-the-flaps are fun!

  3. I Like Myself! by Karen Beaumont, in which the author tries to convince children that they should be happy with who they are and build their self-esteem (good luck with that).

  4. The Princess Knight, by Cornelia Funke, in which Princess Violetta learns to fight and joust just as well as her brothers. It was a little violent, but the pictures were cute. Cornelia Funke is a hugely popular writer for older kids (Inkheart, Dragon Rider, The Thief Lord), and this is one of her forays into writing for younger readers.

  5. Madeline In London, by Ludwig Bemelmans, in which Madeline and her classmates go to London to cheer up Pepito, the son of the Spanish ambassador. They do this by buying him a horse. Aren't those girls orphans? How can 12 orphans and a nun afford a horse? Maybe Pepito's dad let them charge it to him. That plot contrivance is never fully explained. Actually I kind of skimmed this book, so maybe it was explained, but if so, I missed it.

  6. Kitten's First Full Moon, by Kevin Henkes, in which a kitten thinks that the full moon is a bowl of milk in the sky. Henkes' black and white drawings are fantastic, but I could not get past the kitten's dumbness enough to enjoy the story line. It did win the 2005 Caldecot Medal, though, so apparently not everyone shares my opinion.

  7. Why? by Lila Prap. "Why does a kangaroo have a pouch? Because!"

  8. Pat the Bunny, by Dorothy Kunhardt. I didn't really enjoy this book. I just wanted you people to know that I often read The Classics.

  9. Yummy Yucky, by Leslie Porticelli. One of my favorite board books of all time, after Good Night, Gorilla. Baby books are sometimes kind of funny, y'all. Don't deny it.

Oh, I know, I know. I just wanted to go out with a bang/whimper. What? It's my project. I'm counting it.

Happy New Year, peeps! See you in 2006, when Draggletail is allowed to start with a blank slate and try this thing all over again!

Nice work! We have the Princess Violetta book and it elicits many questions from one young reader in particular. I kind of like it though. Wait, who doesn't like Pat the Bunny??
